My wife Lesley and I have been proud residents of Stillwater for over 20 years. We have had the great fortune to raise our sons Everett and August in this beautiful river valley so rich with history. It has been my honor to serve on the District 834 School Board, the Stillwater Planning Commission, the Partnership Plan Board and the SASCA Board, the organizing body of the 5-time and reigning state champion Stillwater Mountain Bike Team. Over the years I have had the opportunity to coach baseball, basketball and soccer, displaying varying levels of competency. With Everett entering his freshman year at Lindenwood University and August a freshman at SAHS we are constantly reminded of the importance of a quality education and that it truly takes a village to help the next generation blossom.
When I was appointed to the School Board in February of 2023 I came to it with the belief that, regardless of where you fall on the social/political spectrum, we all want the best for our children. When I was appointed to the School Board in February of 2023 I came to it with the belief that, regardless of where you fall on the social/political spectrum, we all want the best for our children. Well-intentioned people can disagree on how to define that and how to achieve it. What is important is that we listen to each other respectfully, have an open process for making decisions and keep the needs of students first. The School Board directors, administration and everyone working in our school buildings have impressed me with their dedication to improving the educational experience of our kids. Stability in that endeavor has been a challenge for our district in the past but now we have the leadership in place to ensure that we can identify areas for improvement and address them accordingly. Improvement in education takes concerted effort (and time) and we are well on our way.
I encourage everyone to learn about the challenges facing our schools, engage in conversations with neighbors and vote. The bond referendum on the ballot this fall is crucial to address our capacity issues. I encourage everyone to learn about the challenges facing our schools, engage in conversations with neighbors and vote. The bond referendum on the ballot this fall is crucial to address our capacity issues. We need to replace two schools that are over 100 years old and are too small for their current mission, let alone the influx of new students we will see over the next decade. Growth is a good problem to have but it needs to be thoughtfully addressed before it becomes overwhelming. If you can't vote "yes" for the bond then we should talk. I want to hear the reservations that people have and while I might not be able to change your mind, you should have all the information before you make a decision.
